MacWireless Power Over Ethernet Adapters
Andrew McVinnie

Ever had the need to place an Airport Base Station in a location that did not have access to an electrical outlet? Why run two wires when you could only run one? Long electrical extension cords can be very expensive, but long ethernet cords are cheap as can be. The Power Over Ethernet Adapters may be what you are looking for.

The adapters work by sending both network signal and electrical power over the same ethernet wire.

Even having worked for a traveling carnival company I find it hard to think of a time or place I might need to use the Power Over Ethernet adapters. However, I suppose if you wanted to throw a LAN party on your roof or out in the middle of a field you could. I successfully connected my cable internet modem to my Airport Base Station via the adapters and put the Station about a hundreds yards out of my apartment in a playground that neighbors my building. I then sat on the swings in the playground and surfed the internet via my PowerBook.

The current adapters are compatible with the two original versions of the Airport Base Station (802.11b). MacWireless is currently working on a version of the adapter that is compatible with Airport Extreme Base Stations.
