Apple’s HomePod, and HomePod mini especially, are two of the best speaker options for those invested in the Apple ecosystem.
This easy integration between HomePod and your other Apple devices allows you use use features like Intercom, which allows you to send voice messages from one HomePod to another, or even to other Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and CarPlay.
Setting Up Intercom on HomePod
Before you can start using Intercom, you’ll need to make sure it’s enabled on your HomePod. Here’s how:
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Home icon in the upper-left corner, then tap Home Settings.
- Tap your name under People.
- Make sure the Intercom toggle is turned on.
You can also customize which HomePods and devices receive Intercom messages:
- In the Home app, tap the Home icon, then tap Home Settings.
- Tap Intercom.
- Under Intercom From, choose whether you want to receive Intercom messages from HomePods in any home or only your home.
- Under Intercom To, choose which HomePods, rooms, or zones you want to send Intercom messages to.
As you can see, it’s actually quite easy to use Intercom, though it can take some getting used to. And once you’ve connected your HomePod to other devices, you can get started straight away.
Using Intercom on HomePod
There’s a multitude of different things that you can use Intercom for – one great idea is using it for announcements to other family members, for example letting your kids know when dinner is ready.
And once you’ve set up Intercom, using it is simple. Just say “Hey Siri, Intercom” followed by your message. For example, you can say “Hey Siri, Intercom dinner is ready!” and your message will be played on all the HomePods and devices you’ve selected in your Intercom settings.
If you have multiple HomePods, you can also send a message to a specific HomePod or room by including its name in your command, like “Hey Siri, Intercom the kitchen, can someone bring me a glass of water?“
And when you receive an Intercom message, you can reply directly from your HomePod or other Apple device.
On HomePod, just say “Hey Siri, reply” followed by your message. On an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, you’ll see a notification with the Intercom message – just tap Reply to send a response.
If you have CarPlay in your vehicle, you can also send and receive Intercom messages while you’re on the go.
