OWC introduces Xeon upgrade service for 2013 Mac Pro

2013MacProMac retailer Other World Computing as made available a number of CPU upgrades for the 2013 Mac Pro, which give options of up to 12 cores and speed boosts of between 25 to 46 percent faster than the processors Apple includes with the Mac Pro.

After spending time testing various CPU upgrades for the new 2013 Mac Pro, OWC has finally made its recommended processor upgrades available; however, instead of shipping you a processor and tools to install it, OWC has you send your Mac Pro to its service center, where the company will perform the upgrade for you.

The processors OWC has available for the Mac Pro are the following:

  • Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 8-Core 2.6GHz* with 20MB Cache, 25% faster**, $1498
  • Intel Xeon E5-2667 v2 8-Core 3.3GHz with 25MB Cache, 41% faster**, $2448
  • Intel Xeon E5-2690 v2 10-Core 3.0GHz* with 25MB Cache, 45% faster**, $2396
  • Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 12-Core 2.7GHz with 30MB Cache, 46% faster**, $2978

These processors are guaranteed by OWC to match or surpass the thermal performance of Apple’s included processors, so while the system will run faster, it in most cases should run as cool as if not cooler than Apple’s processor offerings.

As an extra incentive for this service, OWC offers options to trade in your Mac’s current processor for an added discount of $100 to $750, depending on the processor that came with your system:

In addition to processor upgrades, OWC is offering memory upgrades for the Mac Pro, giving options of up to 128GB of RAM, as opposed to Apple’s maximum configuration of 64GB. However, keep in mind that this upgrade option will be rather expensive at $2130 for 128GB.

While this service will undoubtedly impact Apple’s warranty, OWC claims it will fulfill this warranty, in addition to covering its installed parts.
